NC Assist Loan
Deferment of Payments
A deferment is an authorized period of time during which a borrower may postpone principal and interest payments.
Available only to NC Student Assist Loan borrowers
Pros of Deferment
- If you are an NC Student Assist Loan borrower, you may be eligible to receive a maximum of 3 years of in-school deferment of your loan while attending another school. During an approved period of in-school deferment you are not required to make payment.
Cons of Deferment
- During a deferment period interest will continue to accrue and will significantly increase the cost of your loan.
- Accrued, unpaid interest may be capitalized (added to the principal balance of your loan).
- An NC Parent Assist Loan borrower is not eligible for a deferment.
